9-12 year old students start the day with some exercises to prepare their minds and bodies for a day of learning, after which they do daily writing exercises and then start Great Work Time. During this time the students will exercise their intellects with a variety of Montessori materials.
Students have a guide to follow each day, which gives them opportunities work in all subject areas, including but not limited to, Mathematics, Culture/ History, Science, Language Studies and Reading. We presently use the Saxon Math Program and the Houghton Mifflin Reading curriculum.
Language studies are a strong focus with this age group. We work on vocabulary building, reading comprehension and spelling. The goals for the students are to gain a confident and strong knowledge base in both, ASL, and English. This enables them to appreciate the complexity and beauty of both languages and prepares them for a future where both languages will be utilized.
The students are independent in much of their work, but never hesitate to help each other out. It is an excellent way for them to understand the dynamics of working as a cohesive team and realizing how one can contribute to the whole of a group.
